Running (Then Rumming) in St Thomas

Visiting St Thomas? Don’t rush through it. Run through it instead, on one of Active Island Tour’s hour-long tours.

Guides lead groups of runners (and power walkers) on roughly hour-long tours of Charlotte Amalie that combine the city’s most popular sights (15 of them, including Blackbeard’s Castle, the 99 steps, and the waterfront) with a workout you don’t have to be a world-class athlete to survive.

Runs are done at leisurely “long run” pace with frequent stops for selfies, and both running and walking tours are scheduled so that even if you’re visiting on a cruise and only in port for a few hours you can still join in.

The $50 per-person fee includes a moisture-wicking T-shirt and bottled water. And at the end of the tour, everyone’s rewarded for their efforts with a Cruzan rum cocktail. Now if only our local gym would follow suit …
