The United Nations Security Council began a three-day visit to Haiti this weekend.

The trip, which began on Saturday, was co-led by the permanent representatives of the missions of Chile and the United States. It was set to conclude on Monday.

In a statement, the Security Council said the purpose of the mission was to “reaffirm its continued support for the Government and people of Haiti; to urge Haiti’s political actors to work cooperatively and without further delay to ensure the holding of free, fair, inclusive, and transparent legislative, partial senatorial, municipal, and local elections.”

The UN said it also wished to assess the implementation of relevant UN Security Council resolutions and express its “strong support” for MINUSTAH and for Sandra Honore, Special Representative of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in Haiti.

The visit included meetings with Haiti President Michel Martelly, government officials, UN workers and other political leaders, among others.
