A delegation of nine Bahamian officials recently visited Haiti for high-level talks on agriculture.

The delegation, led by Bahamas Agriculture Minister Alfred Gray, spent three days on an official visit to Haiti.

The purpose of the visit was to check and discuss zoo-phytosanitary standards and quality control with a view toward signing a memorandum of understanding between the two countries on the marketing of agricultural products, according to a Bahamian government statement.

The visited followed discussions initiated by Haiti President Michel Martelly and Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe with the Bahamas, including proposals for a bilateral agriculture agreement.

The Bahamian delegation visited a number of departments in Haiti, with the ultimate goal of forming an agreement on trade and technical cooperation in agriculture.

“Now the Bahamas is ready to sign the memorandum of agreement on the quality control of products and zoo-phytosanitary standards with Haiti,” Gray said in a release.

The agreement is slated for signature this week during Martelly’s official visit to the Bahamas this week.
