Dominica will soon be opening a multimillion-dollar Agriculture Centre, the government said this week.

The centre, which was funded by the government of China, will officially open during the country’s Agriculture and Forestry Festival, which begins Monday.

“During the activity we are going to formally declare the Dominica Chinese Modern Agriculture Center open,” said Dominica Agriculture Minister Matthew Walter. “This is a beautiful centre; which is also going to be a significant addition to the objective or to the goal that we have set for ourselves.”

The facility was built at One Mile in Portsmouth, and will serve purposes including the training of farmers and include a propagation area for different type of plants, according to a government statement.

The facility will also include “state-of-the-art” agriculture equipment and technology.

“I need to thank tremendously, profusely, the Chinese Government for making available this very essential initiative that would contribute to security and economic development,” Walter said.

The Minister said that the Chinese Agriculture Mission would also be building a Tissue Culture Facility in the north of the island.
