The Dominican Republic and Turkey have signed agreements on economic and civil aviation cooperation.

The agreements were signed by Dominican Republic President Danilo Medina and Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu during the latter’s visit to the Dominican Republic on Tuesday.

“We see the Dominican Republic as a star player in our relations with Central America and the Caribbean and we intend to use the Dominican Republic as our base for business expansion into this part of the world,” Davutoglu said.

The Foreign Minister was speaking after a meeting with Dominican Republic President Danilo Medina in Santo Domingo.

The agreement also covered a visa exception for diplomatic passports, according to a statement from the Dominican government.

“With the signatures of these agreements we are going to encourage and promote entrepreneurs of the two countries to begin to work together,” he said.

The aviation agreement could eventually mean flights by Turkish Airlines into Santo Domingo, the government said.

It represented the first time a Turkish Foreign Minister had visited the country.
