Haiti Prime Minister Heads to Europe

Haiti Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe is visiting Europe this week for a five-day visit to the continent .

Lamothe will visit France and Belgium on the trip, with the primary goal of attracting new investment in Haiti, according to a statement from his office.

Lamothe will be meeting with French Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault, Belgian Foreign Minister Didier Reynders, European Council President Herman Van Rompuy, European Commissioner for Development Andris Piebalgs and French Overseas Minister Victorin Lurel, among others.

While in Brussels, Lamothe’s EU discussions will include the administration’s vision for European aid to Haiti, the strengthening of cooperation between Haiti and the EU and EU support for development programmes in the Caribbean nation.

Haiti President Michel Martelly made a similar trip to Europe in November 2012.

Lamothe’s office said the trip would allow him to continue the discussions initiated by Martelly on that visit.

The trip concludes on Saturday.
