Inflation Rises in Trinidad and Tobago

Headline inflation in Trinidad rose to 9.4 percent in October, according to data released by the country’s Central Statistical Office.

That represented a 1.7-percentage-point increase compared to a rate of 7.7 percent in September, and a significant increase over a 3.7 percent rate in October 2011.

October’s number was a 1.4 percent increase compared to September.

On a year-over-year basis, food price inflation rose to 18.2 percent in October.

Vegetables, fruits, meat and fish all showed price increases, although the pace of increases for bread and cereals slowed in the same period.

The government said that the removal of Valued-Added taxes on a range of food items was not reflected in the data.

Core inflation, which excludes food prices, was 3.1 percent in October, compared to 2.8 percent in September.
