Glynis Roberts has resigned her position as Grenada’s Minister of Environment, Foreign Trade and Export Development.

The move is the third resignation of a cabinet official from Prime Minister Tillman Thomas’ ruling National Democratic Congress government since April, following those of Tourism Minister Peter David and Foreign Minister Karl Hood.

Roberts could not be reached for comment.

She had previously served as Grenada’s Minister of Labour until a cabinet shakeup in mid-June. At the time, Minister Sylvester Quarless added Labour and Social Security to his Social Development portfolio.

Grenada Information Minister Senator Glen Noel told Caribbean Journal that Prime Minister Tillman Thomas had not yet had received any official word from Roberts or any official communique.

“There is no doubt this may happen, though the Prime Minister did not have the privilege of being informed,” he said. “But we are not surprised. That is linked to a number of activities that have been taking place over the last few days. We were prepared and expected it based on what has been happening over the last few days and weeks, because that has been all over Grenada.”

The decision comes less than a week after Thomas prorogued the current session of Parliament.

“One of the things we have noticed is that none of the parliamentarians who have resigned essentially had the courtesy, for example, to [hear] what the constituency thinks or believes — there was no level of consultation,” he told Caribbean Journal. “But that is part of the political reality and the political landscape.”
