Argentina seems to be preparing to reopen its embassy in Bridgetown.

The country’s embassy closed 22 years ago, and Barbados’ government, led by Prime Minister Freundel Stuart, has been pushing for its return, particularly as the country seeks to forge stronger ties with its Central and South American neighbours.

The plan was revealed during a courtesy call by Argentina’s new ambassador to Barbados, Marco Aldo Salviolo with Stuart Tuesday.

The two sides discussed the planned restoration of Argentina’s onetime embassy, along with increased agricultural and business cooperation.

The embassy opened in 1987, but closd in 1990.

“[The reopening] should certainly deepen the relationship between the two countries as we continue to work closer together,” Stuart said.

Barbados and Argentina could also deepen their ties by working together in both the OAS and the recently-established Community of Latin American and Caribbean States.

Barbados Foreign Minister Senator Maxine McClean held talks with Salviolo earlier in the day in St Michael, focusing on a potential air services agreement with Argentina.
