Grenada Prime Minister Tillman Thomas has given his “full support” to a plan to increase the use of green energy as a replacement for fossil fuels with the newly-launched “Greenada Vision 2030.”

The “Greenada” plan was announced during the launch of Vision 2030, which is a public/private venture in which island states will be helped in their bid to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels.

It is a joint effort between the Climate Institute, the Carbon War Room, the United Nations and other organizations.

“Grenada is determined to play its part in the global battle to mitigate climate change,” Thomas said. “It is my government’s vision that by 2030, 100 percent of our primary demand for electricity generation and for transport will be provided by renewable energy resources.”

The launch meeting was attended by Sir Richard Branson and Aruban Prime Minister Mike Eman.

Grenada, which has been praised for its work on climate change, is focused on becoming a “showcase model” for “distributed forms of energy production.”

Thomas thanked Branson for his contribution to the region, and pledged Grenada’s support for the upcoming Caribbean Challenge Initiative Summit, which will be held on Branson’s private Necker Island in 2013.
