At Nassau’s Baha Mar Resort, The Art of Everything

By: Alexander Britell and Guy Britton - May 4, 2024

A Rosewood. A Grand Hyatt. An SLS. More than 40 restaurants, including eateries by star chefs like Marcus Samuelson and Daniel Boulud. A 100,000-square-foot casino that rivals any in Las Vegas. Two spas. A championship golf course. An art museum. An animal habitat. One of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean.

Lots of resorts say they have something for everyone. At the Baha Mar in Nassau, they have everything for everyone.

If the mega resort on stunning Cable Beach in The Bahamas weren’t so well run and thoughtfully designed, it might even seem overwhelming.

But that’s the beauty of this resort, which in the seven years since I first ventured here hasn’t just gotten better — it’s helped to redefine what a Caribbean resort can be.

It’s sounds like hyperbole, but this is a resort that doesn’t lack for anything — from the culinary program to the nightlife to the sports offerings to the entertainment (the jazz bar is a nightly must).

One of my favorite touches is the collection of food trucks on the beach. It’s creative and fun, and it means you don’t have to leave the beach to get what you’re looking for.

It’s something that you realize the longer you stay here, something that, at a large resort, manifests itself in the little touches: the Bahamian-focused art gallery, the brilliantly-designed food trucks right on the sand; there are even two kosher restaurants.

John Cox is the executive director of art and culture for the resort.

Everything is done with The Bahamas in mind, something that you might not think possible at a 2,200-room property — but think again, from the local crafts in the colorful stalls near the beach to the aforementioned art program, which celebrates both the country’s greatest living artists like Antonius Roberts and a host of young, upstart, exciting new artists, with almost 3,000 pieces.

It’s a place that has actively, deeply thought about the visitor experience, and one that delivers with abundant versatility and consistent quality.

You can go for the more serene, elevated Rosewood experience, sipping cognacs in the library bar and dining at Cafe Boulud. You can enjoy the energy at the SLS’s always-happening pool scene. Or you can be right in the middle of it all at the property’s centerpiece, the Grand Hyatt.

The always-hopping pool at the SLS.

But the biggest story might be the service. What you get across the resort is friendly, thoughtful, welcoming attention, of the sort that never makes you feel like one of a thousand.

The diversity of attractions, food and hotels mean a vacation you can customize; for a family getaway, there’s the spectacular Baha Bay waterpark. Couples can dine at a different world-class eatery every night, take in some spa treatments and try their hand at the tennis center. It goes without saying that, thanks to a massive convention center, it’s a great meetings destination, too.

It’s the luxury of choice. You can make the Baha Mar whatever you want it to be — and whatever you end up choosing, well, turns out to be correct.

We stay at more resorts in the Caribbean than anyone else on earth. And this place is, plainly, fantastic.

Thanks to the art of everything.
