Paul McCartney Honeymooned Here. Now, a Legendary Bahamas Hotel Is Being Reborn

By: Alexander Britell - April 17, 2024

Paul McCartney honeymooned there. Greta Garbo stayed there, as did Raymond Burr and Rita Gam. It was a bold-faced, jet-set hotspot in the 1960s and 1970s.

But then Eleuthera’s Potlatch Club fell into disrepair.

For the last seven years, Bruce Loshusan and Hans Febles have been lovingly restoring the Potlatch Club to its former glory, and in June, the hotel will be officially reopening as the newest boutique hotel in Eleuthera.

The 11-key hotel was reimagined and landscaped by Febles, joined by Nassau-based interior designer Amanda Lindroth.

The reborn hotel is another boost for Governor’s Harbour, a destination in central Eleuthera that has quietly become the hottest place to visit on the island in recent years, with American Airlines now flying nonstop between Miami and GHB airport.

Set on a seven-mile stretch of pink-sand beach in Eleuthera, the hotel is true to its past, with the original club house intact and an old-school checkered-floor look with whitewashed arches.

The property is set on 12 acres of landscaped gardens, with a mix of three new suites, three garden cottages, three ocean-facing cottages and a pair of villas: a one-bedroom and a four-bedroom, with the latter including butler service.

Amenities range from an on-site eatery to a bar called Pavilion to a gym and spa.

Rates will start at around $675 in the high season, but expect to see that lower during the opening period in June.

McCartney’s history at the Club didn’t just include a vacation: he actually wrote several Beatles songs, including Bathroom Window, on a Potlatch Club notepad.

No word yet if the stationery will look the same.
