Frontier Airlines Is Adding a Pair of New Nonstop Flights to Puerto Rico

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - March 25, 2024

If you have been following Caribbean aviation since the pandemic, one name seems to standout: Frontier Airlines, the ultra-low-cost carrier that has been adding new Caribbean routes at a breakneck pace since the early days of the travel reopening.

The carrier has been launching new nonstop flights to a host of Caribbean destinations, from Cancun to Montego Bay, but one destination has seen particularly strong growth: the air hub of Luis Munoz International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

As Puerto Rico’s tourism sector has continued to boom — driven largely by an abundance of cheap nonstop flights from the mainland, Frontier has kept adding more flights from a host of US cities — both traditional Caribbean source markets like Fort Lauderdale and Boston to growing markets like Tampa

The airline’s newest planned routes, though, are from one of the country’s biggest markets: New York.

Frontier has announced plans to kick off a pair of new nonstop routes between the New York area, and San Juan, with flights from both John F. Kennedy International Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport.

Both routes will launch in June, with New York-San Juan beginning on June 6, and Newark-San Juan on June 27.

The JFK-Puerto Rico flights will run twice daily, while Newark-Puerto Rico service will be operating a total of 11 times per week.

It’s a big boost for Puerto Rico as it looks to continue its tourism renaissance.

The new service “significantly expands the options for the airline’s customers when planning their trips to the Island,” said Carlos Mercado Santiago, executive director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company.

Frontier says the new routes will start out with prices as low as $59.
