Iberia Is Planning a Big Puerto Rico Push

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - August 12, 2023

Spain’s Iberia Airlines is looking to expand its already-strong footprint in Puerto Rico.

This winter, the carrier is planning a 33 percent increase in seat availability between Madrid and San Juan, after transporting 120,000 passengers to Puerto Rico in the last 12 months.

The Madrid-San Juan route will expand to daily flights by the beginning of 2024, according to Iberia.

“We are developing an ambitious plan in Latin America and the Caribbean, in which we are going to give a great boost to the connectivity of Puerto Rico with Europe,” said Victor Moneo Ocana, director of alliances and strategic agreements at Iberia. “We are sure that all this will contribute to improving connectivity with Europe and, above all, to increase the arrival of tourists at any time of the year, with what this implies in terms of generating wealth and employment for the country.”

Puerto Rico and Iberia have also renewed their partnership agreement, one that will include a significant push to market the island across continental Europe, including in Germany, Italy and France.

Puerto Rico has been seeing sizzling tourism arrivals from both the mainland United States and, increasingly, Spain.
