The top luxury resort in the Riviera Maya has made its long-awaited return after a large-scale transformation project: Maroma, a Belmond Hotel. 

LVMH’s only hotel in Mexico, and one of just four in the Caribbean, officially welcomed back its first guests this week (Belmond is part of the LVMH portfolio).

The hotel, which has a mix of 72 rooms, suites and villas, is set on a 200-acre site between tropical jungle and Caribbean coastline. 

Long the top luxury resort in the Mexican Caribbean and the Riviera Maya in particular, the reborn property has added everything from a Guerlain-branded spa to a new eatery called Woodend by Michelin-starred Chef Curtis Stone. 

That’s along with another new eatery by Mexican-born Executive Chef Daniel Camacho called Casa Mayor. 

Design studio Tara Bernerd and Partners led the overhaul of the property, with a focus on sustainability that included using 80 percent of furnishings handcrafted in Mexico and even a broad range of pan-Mexican art. 

“The reborn Maroma channels effortlessly chic, hacienda-style living,” Belmond says. 

The transformation also included a complete redesign of all three of the resort’s pools, including the installation of Sukabumi tiles made by hand from volcanic stone. 

Each of the 72 rooms are spread across the beach; the transformation saw the addition f 10 new one and two-bedroom beachfront suites, including some with their own private pools. 

That’s along with the four-bedroom, 3,939-square-foot Villa Maroma, a full-fledged villa option for guests. 

It’s a major addition to the western edge of the region, and a sign of LVMH’s renewed push to expand and transform its Caribbean portfolio.
