In Grenada, a Secret Caribbean Beach

By: Alexander Britell - July 7, 2023

“This is a special place,” Rachelle says, peering out at the stunning greens and blues of La Sagesse.

The moment you turn off the main roads on Grenada’s southeastern coast, the proposition becomes clear.

La Sagesse is one of those beaches that pulls you in and envelops you, making you feel like you’ve stumbled upon a standalone island, a dreamy secret of a beach where you can spend an hour or a day and still feel like you’ve been here for a week.

The palm trees are tall, offering a canopy of shade when you need it.

It’s a horseshoe-shaped bay, where the sand is a shimmering blend of the golden and the volcanic, and the rims are lined with green hills, edged by tall palm trees that themselves seem eager to jump into the sea.

While the far southern corner of La Sagesse is home to a pair of new resorts (the in-development InterContinental and Six Senses), the main stretch of the beach is home to a charming little boutique hotel called La Sagesse

There are just 12 rooms centered around a pink pastel main house, with a lobby built inside a replica sugar mill and a restaurant and bar right at the edge of the sand.

The latter is where Raychelle holds court, serving up some of Grenada’s tastiest seafood, sublime callaloo soup and essential fish cakes.

You can come here and have a rum punch or a Westerhall neat and a seafood lunch and then move to La Sagesse for the day, or you can spend an entire vacation at the hotel and make this your own private corner of the Caribbean.

The blissfully uncrowded shoreline here has that quality you can’t always find, even in the most beautiful corners of the Caribbean: it’s exotic. It feels like a secret you’ve stumbled upon, no matter how many people have apparently stumbled upon it right along with you.

Even on an island blessed with manifold beach jewels (crowned, of course, by Grand Anse), this one does feel unique.

“This is the best beach in Grenada,” Rachelle says.

And while you’re here, you can’t help but agree.
