It’s one of the most charming little towns in the Caribbean: Saint Pierre, the northern village in Martinique that was once the “Paris of the Caribbean” before it was largely destroyed in a volcanic eruption in 1902. 

Today, the town is still one of the major tourist destinations on the island, with a spectacular museum chronicling the history and aftermath of the 1902 eruption, along with a host of lovely little cafes and eateries along the waterfront. 

That includes the Villa Saint Pierre, the area’s top boutique hotel, with a privileged perch in the heart of town right at the edge of the black-sand beach.
