Long-Shuttered British Virgin Islands Resort to Reopen, Rebrand

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - March 26, 2024

The former Biras Creek Resort, which has been closed since the summer of 2015, is planning to reopen as a residential resort destination, Caribbean Journal has learned.

The resort is being rebranded as “Biras Marina & Resort” with plans for a multi-phased opening, according to a spokesperson for the project.

The resort, perhaps best known for its onetime popular beach bar called The Fat Virgin’s Cafe, was one of the top boutique hotels in the British Virgin Islands when it was operating, set in the heart of the beloved North Sound of Virgin Gorda.

At the time it was not clear why the resort closed; that was followed by the devastating hurricanes of 2017 and the property has since been in a state of flux.

Notably, the resort will have both a marina and a residential component. The residential resort model would fit in with one of Biras’ neighbors in the North Sound, the tony Oil Nut Bay.

The plan is to begin with what the resort called an “exclusive restaurant experience unlike anything else in the Caribbean” called Ikigai.

The resort has not yet released a timeline.
