American Airlines is in the midst of a significant expansion in the Mexican Caribbean, centered in the area’s buzzing hotspot of Cancun.

American has just launched a trio of new routes to Cancun International Airport, with new service from Cincinnati, Nashville and Pittsburgh.

That means a total of 18 nonstop routes between the United States and Cancun on American Airlines this winter, and a total of 40 peak-day flights for the winter season.

“American Airlines is ready to help customers escape winter weather with more flights than any other U.S. carrier to the white sand beaches, impressive archaeological sites and vibrant culture of Cancun,” American Airlines said in a statement.

But it’s not just Cancun.

American is also expanding across the Yucatan, with two daily flights to the fast-growing destination of Merida, and six peak-day flights to the island of Cozumel.

That joins American Airlines’ previously-announced expansion to the newest airport in the region: Tulum, where American will be launching four daily nonstop flights starting in March.

Indeed, on March 28 American will kick off new service to Tulum from Charlotte, Dallas-Fort Worth and Miami, another boon for the broader Mexican Caribbean coast.

Cancun has been one of the fastest-growing destinations in the world since the pandemic. Just last year, the Mexican Caribbean destination’s airport handled more than 32 million passengers
