Kimpton opened its first hotel in Tulum in 2021.

First it was Delta Air Lines. Then came Spirit Airlines, followed by plans for three new flights on United Airlines.

Now, it’s American Airlines’ turn.

The world’s largest airline is the newest entry to the instantly-competitive market in Tulum, Mexico, which is about to open its first-ever international airport and has already attracted routes from the country’s major carriers.

Beginning March 28, 2024, American Airlines will be kicking off three nonstop routes to Tulum: Charlotte, Dallas-Fort Worth and Miami.

Miami and Charlotte flights will be operating daily, while Dallas-Fort Worth-Tulum service will be running twice daily.

All of the routes will be operating year round to Tulum, which was for years a boho-chic, wellness-focused destination but has become a Mexican Caribbean powerhouse, with a wave of new hotels from large brands and booming all-inclusive development.

Of course, what hasn’t changed is Tulum’s unique blend of lush mangroves, vibrant culture and spectacular Riviera Maya beaches.

American will be operating all of the flights on Boeing 737 aircraft.

It’s a testament to Tulum’s significant travel demand that its airport has managed to attract routes from four top US carriers before even opening its doors.

The new airport will make getting to Tulum significantly easier, with the Cancun-Tulum drive typically clocking in at around two hours.

Tickets for Tulum flights are already on sale, American confirmed.
