Discovery of offshore oil and gas is a major event for Guyana and for the global oil and gas industry, making Guyana, is a small island nation with a population of just over 750,000 people, one the hottest offshore regions in the world.

Guyana, the seat of the Caribbean Community, CARICOM, is a young democracy with a long and complex history. The country was first colonized by the Dutch in the 17th century, and then by the British in the 18th century. Guyana gained its independence from Britain in 1966.
