Royal Caribbean’s Newest Ship Will Have a Different Focus: Short Getaways

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - June 22, 2023

Royal Caribbean’s new Utopia of the Seas cruise ship is set to make its debut is planning to set sail in July 2024. Like its sister ships in the company’s Oasis class, Utopia will have resort-style pools, copious bars and vast dining options.

But Utopia will have a bit of a different focus: short getaways.

Utopia, a liquefied-natural-gas-powered ship which will be home-porting next summer in Port Canaveral, will be emphasizing three-night weekend and four-night weekday vacations, the first of its Oasis-class ships to do so.

It’s a nod to what seem to be changing attitudes and changing demographics for the cruise industry, looking to capitalize on new travel habits of a millennial-skewed travel class.

It also puts an even bigger emphasis on The Bahamas, where Royal Caribbean has a significant network and where it is also planning to build a new beach club on Paradise Island.

The ship will include 20-different types of accommodations, with both small and large layouts, including rooms for three, four and five travelers; along with a new category called Solarium Suites.

It will have some new touches: a Caribbean tiki bar, an “immersive” culinary experience and what the company bills as the “longest dry slide at sea,” too.

“Vacationers are looking to make every moment count by celebrating and recharging with their friends and family, and Utopia of the Seas makes all that possible in more ways than one,” said Michael Bayley, president and CEO, Royal Caribbean International. “With the variety of dining, bars, pools, entertainment and thrills that make Oasis Class ships revolutionary and the experiences to match on our private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay, we’ve combined the best of the best to create the world’s biggest weekend for everyone.”

Utopia will be sailing to Nassau and Royal Caribbean’s private-island retreat in The Bahamas, Perfect Day at CocoCay.
