The WNBA’s Next Big Star Is From St Thomas, USVI

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - April 10, 2023

The WNBA’s next big star is from the United States Virgin Islands.

Aliyah Boston, an All-American forward for the University of South Carolina, was selected first overall in the WNBA Draft by the Indiana Fever.

Boston’s accolades last year included winning both Naismith Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, among others.

“NUMBER ONE,” the Fever wrote in a message on social media. “Welcome to Indiana, Aliyah Boston.”

Boston follows in the footsteps of another world-class basketball forward from the USVI: Hall of Famer Tim Duncan, who was also the first overall pick — in the NBA Draft, by the San Antonio Spurs back in 1997.

Duncan is a native of St Croix.
