It’s been a big month for Puerto Rico’s Luis Munoz Marin International Airport.

First, ultra-low-cost carrier Frontier Airlines announced plans to add seven new routes from the US mainland to Puerto Rico.

And now another airline is at it, with Spirit Airlines’ plan to launch five new nonstop routes to Puerto Rico this spring.

On May 5, Spirit will kick off new nonstop service from Atlanta, Hartford, Dallas-Fort Worth, Detroit and Chicago-O’Hare to San Juan. (The new Hartford service is particularly notable, joining Spirit’s recently-launched flights to Montego Bay as the only nonstop flights between Hartford and the Caribbean).

All of the new routes will be operating with daily service, with the exception of Hartford-San Juan, which will run three flights per week.

Spirit is also expanding on a number of other routes to Puerto Rico.

On May 5, the carrier is adding an extra daily flight on flights to San Juan out of Baltimore, Newark and Fort Lauderdale. That will mean two daily flights to Puerto Rico on each of those routes.

Spirit has been flying to Puerto Rico since 2001.

By June, the carrier will operate 21 peak-day departures in San Juan, making it the second-largest carrier at the airport.

“Spirit Airlines has served the Puerto Rican community for more than two decades, offering affordable fares to connect family and friends across the United States. Puerto Rico is our number one destination in the Caribbean, with its rich history and culture, renowned beaches, tropical rainforest and the world’s brightest bioluminescent bay,” said John Kirby, Vice President of Network Planning at Spirit Airlines. “We continue our San Juan growth with five new nonstop routes, reaffirming our commitment to the island and making it even easier travel more often.”
