Tripadvisor: Cancun, Punta Cana Leading Caribbean Demand

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - November 15, 2022

Cancun and Punta Cana are the top destinations in the Caribbean for this upcoming winter season, according to a new report from TripAdvisor.

Cancun, the Mexican Caribbean hotspot, and Punta Cana, the Dominican Republic’s tourism hub, both cracked the top 10 destinations globally as measured by searches on Tripadvisor platforms.

Cancun was ranked fourth overall worldwide, while Punta Cana came in at number six.

It’s not a surprise, given that the two destinations are the most popular in the Caribbean Basin in terms of visitor volume.

For American travelers, Cancun was the top international destination, while Punta Cana, Dominican Republic and Playa del Carmen were both in the top four.

The data was gathered and analyzed from two sources: a Tripadvisor Consumer Sentiment Survey and site behavioral data on Tripadvisor.com for searches made by travelers in the US, UK, Australia, Japan and Singapore.

It covered travel demand and patterns for the months of December 2022 through February 2023.

Globally, the desire to travel shows “no signs of abating,” Tripadvisor says, with 67 percent of all respondents planing to travel in the winter season, and the majority of those planning one to two trips.

Almost nine in 10 respondents will travel the same amount or more compared to last year.

“Despite rising costs associated with global inflation, traveler appetite shows no sign of slowing as we head into the winter months in the Northern Hemisphere,” said Alice Jong, Research and Insights Senior Analyst for Media at Tripadvisor. “As we continue our recovery trajectory following the pandemic, we are also seeing positive signs with traveler intent data showing strong demand for long-haul and international travel.”
