Cancun Tourism Is Hotter Than Ever

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - October 6, 2022

Cancun has been the most popular destination in the wider Caribbean Basin since the onset of the pandemic.

That’s led to a massive surge in tourism and a dramatic increase in new airlift from cities across the United States.

And the Mexican Caribbean hotspot shows no signs of slowing down, even in what is traditionally the slowest season of the year.

In fact, it just had its strongest month of the year, as compared to 2019.

In September, Cancun reported 2.181 million passengers at Cancun International Airport, a whopping 37.1 percent increase over the same month in 2019, which had been the destination’s previous record.

That was buoyed by a 41 percent increase in international passenger traffic, according to ASUR, which manages the airport as part of its regional portfolio.

For the year, Cancun passenger traffic stands at 22.398 million, a 15.6 percent increase over the first nine months of 2019.

As a point of comparison, Cancun reported passenger traffic of 19.374 million in the same period in 2019.

The 2022 numbers are also 43.5 percent higher than at the same time last year, according to ASUR.
