Foxwoods Opens Puerto Rico Casino

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - November 18, 2021

There’s a new power player in Caribbean gaming: Foxwoods.

The Mashantucket, Conn-based casino giant has opened its first ever casino in the Caribbean at the Fairmont El San Juan resort in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

It’s a significant boost for an island who has had broad casino gaming for decades but largely failed to capitalize upon it.

Now things are different, with Foxwoods’ entry marketing the first major gaming brand to come to the island.

Foxwoods is a brand of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, which also operates the primary Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut, the largest casino in North America.

“As planned, we are thrilled to finally reopen our doors after five years and deliver exciting new gaming and entertainment experiences to the wonderful people of Puerto Rico and visitors from afar,” said Stuart Levene, managing director and general manager at Foxwoods El San Juan Casino. “This property has been emblematic for Puerto Rico and thus our intent was to maintain the rich history of the venue, and we truly believe the casino’s new identity beautifully pays homage to the casino’s legendary history.”

The casino is currently open from 10 AM to 2 AM daily through mid-december.

The future plan is to be open 24-7, COVID protocols permitting, according to Foxwoods.

“We are proud to help drive the economic development of Puerto Rico with this new alliance through the reopening of our luxurious casino and with all that has been achieved with our iconic Fairmont El San Juan Hotel,” said Andro Nodarse-Leon, Founder & CEO of LionGrove, Co-owner of El San Juan Hotel.
