A Sip of Martinique in Miami

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - September 28, 2021

The Caribbean Rum Awards came to Miami on Monday, with an unforgettable evening of some of the finest rums from across the Caribbean and the island of Martinique in particular.

The event, presented by the Martinique Tourism Authority, was anchored by Christopher Davis, a global rum expert, proprietor of the Rhum Room in St Barth and co-host of the Caribbean Rum Awards.

It also featured a presentation by Muriel Wiltord, director for the Americas at the Martinique Tourism Authority, and American Airlines’ Glenn Heilbron and Evette Negron, who announced the resumption of American’s Miami-Martinique nonstop flights on Nov. 6.

It was hosted at the hottest cigar, whisky and rum bar in Miami, the Empire Social Lounge in Brickell.

Things kicked off with two Martinique essentials: a ti’ vieux cocktail with Rhum JM VSOP and a selection of the island’s famous accras de morue codfish fritters.

Then came the selection.

The tasting featured an unmatched range of rums, including the La Flibuste 1999 from Martinique’s La Favorite; the 1993 El Dorado Enmore from Guyana; Puerto Rico’s Ron del Barrilito four and five star (both of which won double gold at the 2020 Caribbean Rum Awards); Chantal Comte Brut des Futsals La Tour de l’Or La Mauny from Martinique; and Rhum Neisson XO and Rhum HSE Highland Whisky Finish, both from Martinique as well.

Cigars for the event were provided by Enrico Garzaroli, proprietor of Graycliff in Nassau, The Bahamas.

“It was truly a night to remember,” said Alexander Britell, editor and publisher of Caribbean Journal and co-founder of the Caribbean Rum Awards. “In keeping with our St Barth event, this was a full-fledged celebration of the best of rum-making in the Caribbean and an almost impossibly rare selection of the finest rums on earth.”

This year’s Caribbean Rum Awards is set for Nov. 2-7 in St Barth, a week-long slate of rum events, from master classes and private tastings to Davidoff cigar pairing and rum-and-gastronomy dinners, presented by WIMCO Villas, Tradewind Aviation and Accutron.
