Dominican Republic Nearing 3 Million Tourists in 2021

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - September 13, 2021

August was another strong month for the Caribbean’s most popular travel destination — and now the Dominican Republic is approaching 3 million visitors for the year.

So far, 2.9 million travelers have come to the country so far this year, following the arrival of 476,575 non-resident visitors in August.

That represented a 96 percent recovery of the same period in 2019 — and 332 percent above the same period in 2020.

Officials say they expect to eclipse the Dominican Republic’s 2019 numbers by September.

In another strong sign, the country’s room reservation index per night since March 2021 is at its highest since 2018 in the Dominican Republic.

Looking ahead, air bookings for the rest of 2021 are “significantly higher” than in the same period for 2019, according to the country’s Ministry of Tourism.

Indeed, for the next two months, bookings are almost 22 percent higher than September and October of 2019.
