Cancun Airport Traffic Is Climbing

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - April 9, 2021

Air traffic to Cancun’s international airport is steadily climbing, according to new numbers released by parent company ASUR.

For the first time in a year, Cancun International Airport actually posted positive year-over-year growth last month, with a 4.5 percent increase compared to March 2020.

That was buoyed by strong domestic traffic in Mexico, with 692,686 passengers in March, a 42.1 percent Increase over the same month last year.

For the year to date, Cancun has seen a 34.7 percent decrease in passenger traffic compared to the first quarter of last year.

Overall, Cancun International Airport reported just over 3.885 million passengers in the first quarter, down from 5.95 million in the first quarter of 2020.

That number is still far better than comparable airports within the wider Caribbean, with the exception of strong-performing destinations like the US Virgin Islands and the Dominican Republic.
