By: Alexander Britell - December 5, 2020

Kimpton Hotels and Resorts is opening its first-ever hotel in the Mexican Caribbean this month.

The new Kimpton Aluna Hotel will open in the ultra-hip destination of Tulum on Dec. 18, Caribbean Journal has learned.

The property itself first opened in 2018 as an anchor for Tulum’s Aldea Zama community; now it’s taking on the Kimpton brand.

The hotel has 72 rooms and six suites, along with a rooftop bar, two outdoor pools, a swim-up pool bar, a spa, a fitness center, a yoga studio and an off-site private beach club, among other amenities.

It will be managed by Grupo Presidente, a longtime partner of IHG, the parent company of Kimpton.

“We’re thrilled to welcome the Kimpton Aluna Hotel to the Kimpton family, said Mike DeFrino, CEO of This opening officially establishes our brand in Mexico, and provides an incredible opportunity for us to take part in the extremely rich culture and growing market of Tulum. We look forward to furthering IHG’s trusted relationship with Grupo Presidente to offer guests Kimpton’s trademark amenities and heartfelt service.”

It will be Kimpton’s second hotel in the Caribbean, joining the Kimpton Seafire in Grand Cayman.

Kimpton has two other hotels in the Caribbean in the pipeline, with properties in development in both Grenada and Roatan, Honduras

The Grenada property, the Kimpton Kawana Bay, is likely to open in 2021 on Grenada’s Grand Anse Beach.
