Haiti’s Must-Visit Jazz Festival

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - November 25, 2018

By the Caribbean Journal staff

It’s become one of the Caribbean’s leading music festivals — and now the Port-au-Prince International Jazz Festival is at it again.

The week-long PAPJAZZ is back for its 13th annual edition this year, with events from Jan. 19 to 26, 2019 in the heart of Haiti’s capital.

This year’s edition will include jazz stars including Grammy Award-Winning Jazz vocalist Cecile Mclorin Salvant, Spain’s Flamenco jazz artist Antonio Serrano, Fusion jazz violinist Chelsey Green, France’s Jazzy funk band Dam’nco, Guadeloupe’s Fusion Gwo Kaand American Grammy Award-winning trumpeter Terence Blanchard (the man behind the scores for some of Spike Lee’s greatest films).

Haiti’s edge and strength from a social & touristic perspective is its culture and the Port-au-Prince International Jazz festival is a platform that showcases not only jazz music from all over the world but also all the diversity of the rich Haitian music and art. Approaching this 13th edition, we can proudly say that the PAPJAZZ fest is unique, well organized, caters to all audiences and is a must,” said Joel Widmaier, president of the Haiti Jazz Foundation.

The event will include events on 10 different stages across Port-au-Prince, along with after-hours jam sessions at restaurants in the capital, free music workshops and “empowerment seminars” for local Haitian artists.
