Carnival Cruise Line has cut the first steel on its newest, largest cruise ship.

The as-yet-unnamed ship, which will be the first-ever operating ship in North America to run on liquefied natural gas, is being built at Meyer Turku in Finland.

The ship is slated for delivery in 2020.

“This new ship promises to be truly special, from its groundbreaking technology and one-of-a-kind features to its distinctive livery and hull design that is both timeless and forward-thinking while paying tribute to our nearly 50-year history of making wonderful vacation memories for our guests,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line.

The 5,200-plus lower berth ship will homeport in Port Canavaeral, Fla, with itineraries set to be unveiled in January.

Carnival is already planning to debut another LNG-powered ship in 2022.
