Carnival Cruise Line has launched the first-ever wearable tech for cruise ships.

It’s called the Ocean Medallion, and the wearable includes a number of benefits, including allowing guests to access their staterooms without a key; locate friends and family on the ship; purchase merchandise without cards or paper; power interactive gaming and entertainment experiences and streamline and expedite port embarkation and disembarkation.

The tech, which was developed by Carnival, includes a network of intelligent sensors and computing devices in the shape of a quarter-sized, 1.8-ounce disc that can be carried in your pocket or accessorized with key chains or jewelry.

“With this interactive technology platform, we are poised to have our global cruise line brands at the vanguard of forever changing the guest experience paradigm – not just in the cruise industry but in the larger vacation market and potentially other industries,” said Carnival Corporation CEO Arnold Donald. “Our focus is on exceeding guest expectations every single day and consistently delivering great experiences, and we do that extremely well. Now we are in prime position to take the guest experience to a level never before considered possible and build on cruising’s popularity and value as the fastest growing segment of the vacation sector.”

The medallion, which will pair with a digital concierge called Ocean Compass, will debut on Princess Cruises’ Regal Princess, followed by Royal Princess and Caribbean Princess in 2018.
