There’s a World-Class Art Gallery on a Caribbean Rum Plantation

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - December 11, 2016

It’s the only of its kind in the world: a top-level art gallery on a rum plantation.

But Fondation Clement is much more than that — it is spectacularly designed art space that’s quickly become one of the must-visit places on the island of Martinique and the wider Caribbean.

The gallery, located on the famous Habitation Clement, home to one of Martinique’s top rum brands, was designed by Reichen and Robert & Associes. It first opened at the beginning of this year.

Every year, a new exhibition season opens here to the public, along with the constant acquisition of new artwork relevant to the Caribbean. The latter are also exhibited with regularity.

While the artwork is always fresh and thought-provoking, Paris-based Reichen et Robert’s edifice is itself impressive, a metalwork monolith that somehow merges perfectly with its rural plantation surroundings.

It sends a strong message — that in the heart of the Caribbean, on the site of an old distillery, there can be something world-class, something magnificent.

See more in the latest CJ video above, featuring the latest exhibition at the gallery, Armature by Herve Beuze.
