Caribbean Hotels Continue Summer Struggle

Caribbean hotel occupancy continues to plummet this summer.

The latest report from analytics firm STR showed the region’s hotel occupancy sliding to 70.8 percent in July, a 5.4 percent drop from the same month in 2015.

That came after a 6.1 percent year-over-year drop in June, according to STR.

The Caribbean’s hotels saw a 6.9 percent drop in average daily rates to $187.65, with RevPar (revenue per available room) dropping by 11.9 percent in July.

For the year, Caribbean hotel occupancy stands at 70.2 percent, down 3.7 percent from the first eight months of 2015.

STR’s survey data covered 1,928 hotels comprising 240,407 rooms in the wider Caribbean region.
