Why Grenada Is a Must-Visit Sailing Destination

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - February 5, 2016

The Spice Isle has some wind in its sails.

Grenada’s tri-island destination is increasingly a hub for top-level sailors, and it’s easy to see why: perfect conditions, a welcoming community and, well, spectacular water.

And then there’s Grenada as sailing hub: the perfect jumping off point to explore Carriacou, Petite Martinique and the Grenadines chain.

That’s helped by the presence of eight great marinas, from low-key facilities to superyacht havens.

To top it off, the country just hosted its annual Island Water World Grenada Sailing Week, one of the Caribbean’s top regatta events.

Here’s what it was like:

Richard Szyjan’s Category 5  was the definitive winner of the Racing Class, with spinnaker up and flying at speed.

Ralph Johnson’s Rapajam from Barbados won the Racer Cruiser 1 Class Start.

Mathew Barker’s The Blue Peter came first in the Classic Class

And if you want to let someone else do the sailing, you can take outfits like Island Windjammers out of St George’s Grenada and visit Grenada and the wider Grenadines, too.

Indeed, coming in July is a Rum Cruise out of Grenada aboard the Diamant ship from July 8 to 14 — meaning sailing and daily samplings of exotic rums led by expert Dave Russell.
