A major addition to Playa del Carmen is now officially open.

Thompson Playa del Carmen, the brand’s first Caribbean region hotel, debuted on the Riviera Maya this weekend.

The 92-room hotel is located on the popular Fifth Avenue in Playa del Carmen, marked by its signature 30,000-square-foot rooftop complex that includes an infinity pool.

It also features the first Mexican outpost of New York City hotspot CATCH (which will be home to DJ sets at the hotel’s planned New Year’s Eve bash).

The company has said the aim of the property was to create a “vibrant, 1950s-inspired, glamorous Mexican oasis.”

The hotel, owned by Thor Urbana Capital and managed by Communie Hotels and Resorts, was created by designers including Merida-based Seijo Peon and AS Arquitectura, along with Mexico City architecture firm GFa and design firm Niz+Chauvet.

That’s led to some seriously cool guestrooms, with the hotel’s suites including outdoor stone surface hot tubs and fire pits.

The hotel includes two portions: the second, the hotel’s Beach House, is slated to debut early next year with 27 rooms and suites.
