Belize Prime Minister Dean Barrow has been sworn in for a third consecutive term.

The historic win for Barrow and his United Democratic Party came in this week’s general election, a snap election called by Barrow in September.

He will be the first Belizean Prime Minister to serve a third term in Parliament.

He was sworn in at the end of this week in a brief ceremony at Belize House in Belmopan.

The country’s other elected representatives are expected to be sworn in this week.

Barrow’s win was something of an outlier in the Caribbean, given a recent general trend of opposition victories in the Caribbean over the last few years.

That’s included opposition victories in Antigua and Barbuda, Grenada, Jamaica, the Bahamas, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago over the last four years.

Barrow’s UDP won 19 seats while the opposition People’s United Party won 12 of 31 seats.
