A cultural celebration in Haiti

It’s just the 12th time the regional CARIFESTA festival has been held, but this year’s edition is finally in one of the region’s cultural capitals: Haiti.

The festival, which officially began on Aug. 21, has been running in cities across Haiti.

The festival is a mix of art, dance, music, cultural storytelling and more, with delegations from across the region.

It’s as much a celebration of the Caribbean itself as it is of culture, honoring the cosmopolitan, diverse world of the wider region.

It’s also drawn some big stars, both from abroad and at home, like Haiti’s famous reggae star, Jahnesta (above).

And it’s also been a chance for the country to highlight its budding tourism sector for visitors from around the globe, and managed to work through a suspension during Tropical Storm Erika’s passage at the end of last week. While the storm did cause some damage in the country, it was far short of that caused by storms in recent years.

The festival concluded Sunday.
