Bahamas, United States Hold Talks on Spying Allegations

The governments of the United States and the Bahamas held talks on Tuesday and Wednesday “at the highest levels” to address recently-reported allegations of widespread NSA spying in the Bahamas, the government said.

The Head of the Foreign Service of the Bahamas met with a Deputy Assistant Secretary of State in Washington, according to Foreign Minister Fred Mitchell, who said that was “the appropriate level.”

The allegations were reported by journalist Glenn Greenwald based on information from former NSA contractor Edward Snowden.

“I am in constant communication with American officials on a daily basis,” Mitchell said in a statement. “There is another high level meeting planned at the political level at the Organization Of American States meeting Paraguay in the first week in June.”

Earlier this week, the Bahamas called the reports of widespread recording of phone calls in the country “startling,” and vowed to meet with US officials to explore the issue.
