The United Nations is welcoming the recent publication of Haiti’s new Electoral Law, the world body announced in a statement.
Sandra Honore, Special Representative of United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in Haiti, issued the statement, joined by the “Core Group” of foreign ambassadors in Haiti that includes those from the United States, the European Union, Canada and the Organization of American States.
The electoral law was officially published in Haiti’s official gazette last week following its recent passage by Parliament.
The series planned legislative and municipal elections in Haiti have been delayed for more than two years.
“The publication of the electoral law is an important step in the organization of elections in Haiti. The organization of elections is necessary to strengthen democratic processes and the condition of the rule of law,” the group said. “The ‘Core Group’ reiterates its disposition to support free, fair and inclusive elections.”
