St Kitts and Nevis has officially completed construction on a 1-megawatt solar farm at the country’s Robert L Bradshaw International Airport.

The solar farm will officially launch with a ceremony on Wednesday, one day ahead of the twin-island federation’s 30th anniversary of independence.

The farm is the product of a joint venture between the governments of St Kitts and Nevis and Taiwan, which donated $1 million for the project.

“This 1MW solar farm has been constructed to provide power for the airport,” said Lenrick Lake, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Energy, in a statement. “It forms part of the government’s initiative to see the Federation of St Kitts and Nevis become the smallest green nation in the Western Hemisphere.”

The farm launched construction in March of 2013. It should make the airport entirely reliant on green energy.

The solar farm is the latest green energy partnership between Taiwan and St Kitts and Nevis — projects on which the two countries have worked together have included solar highway lighting and solar panels at Government House.
