What if you could travel from island to island in the Caribbean, without being charged a roaming fee on your mobile phone?

That’s the idea recently put forth by Grenada Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell, who says that the Caribbean needs to embark on a new technological era “to drive the region forward.”

“When you make a call you make a call. It should also be so in the Caribbean. That will help to do precisely this”, he told leaders at the CARICOM Heads of Government conference earlier this month.

The idea is part of a wider concept by Mitchell to transform the Caribbean into a “single ICT state” alongside the Single Market.

Mitchell, who was elected in February, has been making regional issues like transportation and now technology a priority this summer, and says he is pushing for a meeting with regional ICT Ministers in St George’s to make the Caribbean a “single ICT state.”

“We will take some of the major issues from the meeting in Grenada to the next Heads of Government meeting, and a number of other decisions that we have all agreed, are going to be crucial for the development of the region as a whole,” he said.
