Haiti has officially launched a public request for proposals for tourism development on the island of Ile a Vache, the Tourims Ministry announced.

The country is looking to develop what it called “low-density, sustainable tourism” on the island, which is located off the coast of Haiti, southeast of Les Cayes.

The new RFP aims to select “local and foreign private sponsors and investors, who are interested in developing and operating tourism sites and providing services included in this project in the Île-à-Vache community,” the Ministry said in a statement.

Haiti’s plans for Ile-a-Vache were first put together by an interdepartmental work team last year, the Ministry said. For more information on the country’s initial proposal, read here.

The Ministry said it wanted to “guarantee the preservation of cultural integrity, ecosystems and biodiversity of the island.”

“This type of tourism development will also promote social and economic development of the communities living on the island,” the Ministry said.
