Nevis is planning a series of enhancements at its famous Pinneys Beach.

Work has already begun on a project to develop 14 acres of land bordering the beach to allow for increased recreational activities and beach vending, the government said this week.

“We are looking at a 14-acre plot of land that has been earmarked for development,” said Assistant Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism Carl Williams. “This area was earmarked some time ago for public use. However, the time is right for us to get it going.”

The area will have a total of 14 new vending booths when the work is complete, he said, with a five-acre plot of land available for picnicking and the like.

“All of this is aimed at improving the tourism product of the island,” he said.

According to the Nevis Island Administration, the work is expected to be done by the beginning of the upcoming tourist season, after starting two weeks ago.

The NIA is also planning some beautification projects for the area, including the replanting of coconut trees.

“We are aware that once ago Pinneys was renowned for its coconut trees, and we want to revive that tradition,” he said.
