Construction is set to begin of a solar farm at Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw International Airport in St Kitts.

The project is a collaboration between St Kitts and Nevis and the government of Taiwan, which has donated $1 million in funding.

“Today is the beginning of a new phase for both countries cooperation in renewable energy,” said Taiwan Ambassador to St Kitts and Nevis Miguel Tsao.

“Taiwan would like to share this cutting – edge industry with St. Kitts and Nevis, the most important partner and diplomatic allied country of Taiwan.”

Tsao spoke following a brief handover ceremony on Wednesday, saying renewable energy had become a global trend.

“We see the green economy, not only as the area of renewable energy, but as a means of providing new opportunities for the people of St. Kitts and Nevis,” said Energy Minister Dr Earl Asim Martin.

The aim of the project is to make the airport a self-reliant green airport. It is projected to produce 1 megawatt of solar power.

It’s the latest green energy partnership between St Kitts and Taiwan — from solar lighting on the country’s main highway to panels at government headquarters in Basseterre.
