The Opposition Barbados Labour Party has chosen a new leader, following its narrow defeat in Barbados’ election last Thursday.

Mia Mottley is replacing former Prime Minister Owen Arthur as the leader of the BLP in Parliament.

Arthur had led the party since 2010, although he also served for 14 years as Prime Minister from 1994 to 2008, when he stepped down as BLP leader for two years.

In a statement on Facebook, the BLP said it “would like to congratulate Mia Mottley on becoming leader of the Opposition Barbados Labour Party.”

Barbados Prime Minister Freundel Stuart leads the Democratic Labour Party with 16 of 30 seats in Parliament.
