Nicholson: Jamaica to Begin Dredging Kingston Harbour in Third Quarter

Jamaica’s government projects to begin dredging Kingston Harbour in the third quarter of this year, according to Foreign Minister AJ Nicholson.

The Foreign Minister, who was responding to questions from Opposition Senator Kavan Gayloe about the development and expansion of the Kingston Container Terminal, said discussions were proceeding with “two overseas institutions,” as well as Venezuela’s PetroCaribe Development Fund, to finance the project.

“The dredging of the Kingston Harbour is a priority of the government and is critical to the development and expansion of the Kingston Container Terminal and shipping services, to take advantage of expected opportunities from the completed expansion of the Panama Canal,” Nicholson said at a sitting of the Senate Friday.

The dredging should be completed by 2014, he said.

The dredging is part of the government’s wider logistics hub project in Jamaica.
