The Organization of American States will send a team to Grenada to monitor the country’s elections Feb. 13, following an invitation by Prime Minister Tillman Thomas.

The OAS has confirmed its decision to deploy an “electoral technical assessment mission to Grenada on or about Jan. 21, 2013” for a two-week period, according to a government release.

Thomas requested the OAS’ presence in a letter to “evaluate and verify the integrity of the new voter registration system and to observe and monitor the next general elections in Grenada when it is called.”

Thomas said he had also instructed the OAS’ Department of Electoral Cooperation and Observation to take the “necessary steps” to deploy an electoral mission to the country for elections.

The election date was announced on Sunday at a rally.
